Durable floor mats designed and made to fit your area can help reduce stress on the neck, legs and lower back. In addition, anti-fatigue mats provide a cushion between your feet and a cold hard floor. Purchasing matting for your facility is a solid and valuable investment; but what’s the next step? How can you best prepare the space or a work cell for a game-changing mat project? It all begins with (no surprise) proper planning.
Before diving in, a word of caution – don't place mats haphazardly across the floor space under the guise of safety. This may increase the risk of tripping hazards and can lead to falls and other injuries.
Considerations on Ordering Oversized & Cut to Size Custom Shaped Floor Mats
Create a Vision
Visualize your space – where will the mat be placed in relation to your layout? Do you need a continuous floor plan? What types of furniture and equipment must be accommodated (chairs, tables, elevated platforms, carts traffic)? Remember, purpose precedes placement.
You don’t have to be a Da Vinci to draw a simple sketch of your space needs. As you walk through facility, make notes about specs, concerns, constraints or details about the space. Pay attention to issues such as immovable equipment, building layout quirks or anything that could alter the cutting and prep work for the mat. Photos can also be helpful.
Don’t forget to take table legs or other obstacles into account, in case holes need to be cut onsite to accommodate them.
Depending on the specific requirements for the space, there are generally three options available when ordering a custom mat:
- Stock sizes -- standard sizes ready to ship for placement at individual workbenches, tables or machines.
- Custom length designs for industrial applications – used to add safety and ergonomic support to long production runs, assembly areas or pick pack lines.
- Custom configurated designs -- typically placed around machinery, work cells or tables with unique layouts or floor plans.
Don’t worry if you’re not sure what you need. The experienced NoTrax team will transform your matting vision into reality, crafting custom CAD drawings to match your specs and material needs. We’ve got you covered!
The Shape of Things to Come
Once you have a plan in mind, your customization needs will start to flow. NoTrax offers a wide variety of floor mats that can be custom shaped or custom cut, such as mat sizes cut to a specific length from a roll. We also supply mats fabricated into unique shapes such as U or L to fit into uniquely designed setups.
Perhaps your custom mat vision is something that has yet to be developed. Our design team can collaborate with you to create a solution that’s never been constructed! We make your vision a reality.
NoTrax excels on custom length mats to meet specific needs. Our long-aisle solutions for extended runs provide cost effective solutions for oversized areas. Choose from standard mat widths of 2 to 5 feet in lengths up to 150 feet or more to create a seamless look of continuous runs with no valleys. Other choices include beveled or straight edges.
Sometimes the best solution is to “lock in” an optimal mat plan. Our interlocking mat systems are simple to use and customizable for your workspace. Modular mats are installed on-site with connecting mats that can be shaped in just about any configuration. It’s literally a snap!
Choosing the best mat solution for your needs may not be the easiest part of the planning process, so it’s helpful to be aware of the available features and specifications. While the NoTrax team is always available to discuss our industry-leading features and options, some general education about our product offerings is always helpful.
For starters, the heaviest duty diamond plate De-Flex® Heavy Duty Interlocking Rubber Mat system is manufactured with rugged, thick (.75 inch) rubber. It deploys interlocking floor tiles that hold up to tons of wear and tear. Plus, the tiles don’t expand and contract like vinyl.
De-Flex tiles boast a diamond plate design that gives workers more traction, while still allowing them to pivot. The 18 x 18-inch tiles work together with the De-Flex Ramps system. This allows you to create one continuous floor that helps eliminate trip hazards. The rubber tiles naturally result in improved ergonomics as compared to vinyl. De-Flex is constructed with bullet domes on the back side, to make bending and flexing easier when exposed to a heavy load.
The Cushion Trax® Anti-Fatigue Workstation Mat is a durable solution for industrial applications well-suited for multi-shift, standing operations in dry work areas. Cushion Trax’s heavy-duty vinyl diamond-plate design provides non-directional traction, certified non-slip backings and a lifetime warranty.
The Diamond Sof-Tred™ Anti-Fatigue Mat features Dyna-Shield®, a top-surface manufactured directly into the mat for long-lasting wear. PVC foam construction provides additional cushioning to relieve leg and back discomfort. Diamond Soft-Tred also utilizes non-directional diamond plates, textured and embossed to maximize worker comfort. In short, it’s the gold standard for cost-effective yet durable anti-fatigue mats.
Tips for Ordering Made to Measure Custom Matting for Your Floors
Know Your Bevels
Most people don’t spend a lot of time thinking about bevels (the inclined or ramped edges of a mat). However, proper bevel placement can enhance matting safety by minimizing tripping risks. As a rule, the addition of bevels will usually increase mat size between 2 and 6 inches per side applied.
But there’s no need to get baffled by bevels – NoTrax can customize bevels and their respective locations to meet your exact needs as well as providing detailed instructions upon installation.
Take a stand
As part of the measurement and sketching stage, think on your feet – well, think about feet. Where will employees be standing? Which mat will work best for each situation? To ensure the best “feet fit,” make sure the mat extends about four inches under the workstation or machine. This allows workers to align themselves with the workstation as they get used to it. Plus, it ensures robust foot support.
